Alpine descent in Liechtenstein

When the cattle return to the valley
ALPINE DESCENT PRADAMEE 2020

Festively decorated

As the summer draws to a close, one of the most beautiful traditions of the Alpine region begins in Liechtenstein: the Alpabfahrt. Every year in the fall, festively decorated cows and cattle return from the Alps (mountain pastures) to the valley - accompanied by proud farmers and numerous enthusiastic spectators.

Cattle coming

Each Alp has its own customs when it comes to leaving. The time of departure depends on the fodder that the pastures still provide in late summer and, of course, the weather; an early onset of winter can lead to an early end to the Alpine summer. In addition to elaborately decorated headdresses, the animals also wear small or large bells. It is a special experience for locals and visitors alike to witness this feast for the eyes and ears.

"Miss Liechtenstein" pageant

The "Miss Liechtenstein" is the most beautiful cow in the country: Experts judge and award prizes for the cattle at three "premium markets". The first premium market is traditionally held by Triesenberg farmers in mid-September. This is where "Miss Steg" is chosen. This is followed by the premium market in Vaduz on the first Saturday in October, where the animals from the other Oberland municipalities are awarded prizes, i.e. "Miss Oberland". The following week, the Unterland farmers' premium market takes place in Eschen. Here, the most beautiful cow in the lowlands, "Miss Unterland", is chosen before the three winners are named "Miss Liechtenstein". In Vaduz and Eschen, a fair also takes place at the same time as the premium market.
