Tradition, music & celebration
Whether at the big carnival parade, at a masked ball or in the middle of a monster concert - the joy of celebrating is alive and well here. Every municipality has its own traditions, but one thing is the same everywhere: carnival is full of energy and surprises.
The ABC of carnival
Allweg kwösso
"Alaaf" or "Helau" are probably the better-known jesters' cries. You have to be an advanced Liechtenstein carnival pro before you dare to use the Schaan "Allwäg kwösso".
Gugga music
Brass music with a strong rhythmic underlay, played "wrong" in its own, very specific way, is represented in almost every municipality in Liechtenstein with its own formation.
Fasnachtbuzi
They are carnival revellers in fancy dress. They can be found in particular at masquerade balls and street carnivals.
Monster | Mönsterle
This is what the monster concert is called in Liechtenstein. It's a joint concert by many Gugga musicians who play one after the other. The biggest monster concert takes place on Carnival Saturday in Schaan.
Ruassla
On "schmotzigen" Thursday, people "gruasslet". Children in particular blacken each other's faces - in the past with soot, today they use cork cones that are lit with a lighter.
