Description

In 1931, the municipal assembly and in 1932 the strengthened municipal council approved the construction of a new Vaduz town hall, the costs of which amounted to almost three times the total income of the municipality. The driving force behind the project was the mayor at the time, Ludwig Ospelt.

The economic and financial situation in Vaduz at the time was anything but good. Nevertheless, in 1931 the people were brave enough to approve a project with a cost estimate of up to CHF 350,000. By the standards of the time, this was a huge sum when compared with the annual tax and total income.

On November 17, 1931, the municipal assembly decided to build a town hall with premises for the bank in Liechtenstein on the building site opposite the "Engel" inn. Numerous planners competed for the contract. In the end, Franz Roeckle was allowed to present his project designs to the strengthened municipal council on January 29, 1932 and was awarded the contract on the same day.

Construction work progressed rapidly and the town hall was officially opened on November 19, 1933. The Vaduz Town Hall served various purposes in addition to the mayor's office, the municipal council and the municipal administration: it housed the Bank in Liechtenstein, the Liechtensteinische Landesbank, the post office and various clubs and associations. It has been renovated and rebuilt several times.

A comprehensive renovation was carried out in 1984 under Mayor Arthur Konrad. Since then, the town hall has been used exclusively for municipal purposes. Ludwig Ospelt (mayor from 1930 - 1933 and 1936 - 1942) was the first incumbent to be based in the town hall.

The interior and exterior architecture of the town hall can also be seen in connection with works by various artists. The balcony fresco by Johannes Troyer on the south façade shows St. Pope Urban, the patron saint of winegrowers. The balcony parapet is adorned with a winegrower and a winegrower's wife on the front and ears of corn and corncobs on the side. The municipal coat of arms, carved in stone by Engelbert Ospelt, can be seen on the front of the entrance. The coat of arms was awarded to the municipality of Vaduz on July 26, 1978, the 40th anniversary of the accession to power of Prince Franz Josef II.
