History of viticulture

Viticulture has been practiced in this region for over 2,000 years. The Romans brought the first vines to the region. The mild climate due to the warm Föhn wind and the centuries of experience of the local winegrowers have made excellent wines possible ever since.

A year in the vineyard

From pruning in winter to harvesting in fall: passion and craftsmanship make every wine a genuine piece of Liechtenstein.

Winter

Pruning

The year for winegrowers begins with the first frost after the harvest. During the cold season, the vines are dormant. During this time, the vines are pruned. This usually takes place between November and February and is always done by hand. Annual pruning is essential for the growth of vine and for the quality of the grapes.

Spring

Vegetation phase

The vegetation phase in the vineyard begins in spring. If necessary, new vines are planted during this time and old, dead vines are replaced. Pruning of the vines also begins now. Unwanted shoots are removed to strengthen the remaining ones.

Summer

Depending on the temperature, budding occurs at the end of April to the beginning of May. The buds left over from pruning open and allow small, green leaves to emerge. During the subsequent flowering in June, the vines need plenty of rest. To give the grapes enough light, leaves are removed by pruning.

Fall

Grape harvest

The highlight of the wine year is the grape harvest in the fall. Depending on how early or late the grapes are harvested, this has an impact on sweetness, alcohol content and taste. During the harvest, it is important to bring the grapes to the winery as quickly and undamaged as possible in order to protect the berries from oxidation. The grape harvest involves an enormous amount of effort and logistics, as the right weather has to be waited for and many helpers have to be organized and coordinated. In Liechtenstein, the grapes are still harvested by hand. After being brought home, the grapes are crushed (pressed) and gently fermented.
