Description

Alp Guschg is owned by the Guschg Alpine Cooperative and is a cow pasture where various cheeses, butter and yoghurt are still produced and sold using traditional methods. The alp has existed in its present form since 1503. For the first 450 years or so, the alps were absolutely essential for the farmers, whose share of the total population was around 90 percent until the 20th century. For them, being able to take their cattle up to the Alps in summer was an important part of their livelihood, especially as it allowed them to make hay in the valley and build up sufficient supplies for the winter.

Likewise, today's drained reed areas used to be swamp and forest areas that did not allow any yield. Nowadays, the proportion of farmers in the total population has fallen to a few percent, but the required benefits are no different than in the past. The farmers who still exist have considerably more livestock than in the past, and the number of agricultural areas in the village has shrunk considerably due to the expansion of the settlement area in the valley. The necessity of the Alps for agriculture is therefore still there.

Alp Guschg is open from mid-June.
