Sure-footedness, a head for heights and mountain experience are required for Route 66. Hiking boots with a good profile are essential.
In the Pfälzer hut a hut sleeping bag is obligatory and payment is made in cash only.
By car:
- Parking in Vaduz: If you want to park your car in Vaduz, there are various public parking spaces available (most of them chargeable). The "Marktplatz" underground parking garage opposite the "Vaduz, Post" bus stop is particularly convenient. From there, bus line 21 takes you directly to Malbun. The journey is free with the Adventure Pass . After the tour, you return by bus and pick up your car there.
- Parking in Malbun: You can also leave your car in one of the parking lots P1 - P4 in Malbun free of charge during the entire hut tour. You can pick it up there at the end of the tour. The return journey by public transport is free with the Adventure Pass .
By public transport:
From your starting point, you can travel by train to Sargans/Buchs (CH) or Feldkirch (A). From there, you can take a LIEmobil bus and travel comfortably to the bus stop "Vaduz, Au". There you change to bus line 21 to Malbun and travel to the terminus "Malbun, Zentrum". The bus ride is free from all three stations mentioned with a valid Adventure Pass .
Start of the tour:
- By chairlift: The tour starts at the Sareis valley station, directly behind the "Malbun, Zentrum" bus stop. From there, you can take the chairlift to the top station in comfort. The ride is included in the Adventure Pass . At the top, you start your hike towards Pfälzer hut.
- On foot without the chairlift: Alternatively, you can also walk up to the Sareis mountain station. The walk takes around an hour. Get off at the bus stop "Malbun, Jöraboda" and follow the path via the chapel to the mountain station.
Day 1: If you arrive the day before, you can enjoy a relaxing night in the valley area or directly in the mountain village of Malbun. The first day of hiking begins in Malbun. From there, you can reach the Sareiserjoch at 2000 meters on foot or by chairlift. From here, follow the "Fürstin Gina" Trail to the Augstenberg mountain at 2358 meters. A panoramic route with bright alpine flowers and impressive views awaits you. After around four hours of hiking, the cosy Pfälzer hut at 2108 meters awaits you with dinner and overnight accommodation.
Day 2: Early risers can expect a special experience: the sunrise on the Naafkopf mountain at 2570 meters, where the borders of Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Austria meet. You should allow around two and a half hours for the ascent and descent. Back at the Pfälzer hut , a hearty breakfast will fortify you for the next stage. The trail leads via Alp Gritsch through the idyllic Valüna valley to Gänglesee lake in Steg. This section takes around four hours.
Once you arrive at Gänglesee lake , you have two options: You can either hike on to your accommodation and enjoy wonderful views of the valley on the way, or you can opt for the bus. You can spend the night in the Berggasthaus MATU on Gaflei or in a hotel in Triesenberg. You can reach your destination on foot in around one and a half hours, depending on the location of your accommodation. Alternatively, take the LIEmobil bus no. 21 from "Steg, Tunnel" to "Triesenberg, Dorfzentrum". If you are staying overnight at the Berggasthaus MATU , change there to line 22 to "Gaflei, Matu".
Day 3: After a hearty breakfast, the tour continues from Gaflei. If you have stayed overnight at the Berggasthaus MATU , you start right on the doorstep. If you stay overnight in Triesenberg, the LIEmobil bus route no. 22 will take you comfortably to Gaflei. The highlight of the day is the challenging tour over the Fürstensteig Trail and the Drei Schwestern mountain chain at 2053 meters. Spectacular mountain climbs and breathtaking views of the Alps and the Rhine Valley await you. Shortly before the day's destination, the Gafadura hut at 1428 meters invites you to take a refreshing break. The tour ends in Planken after a total walking time of around five hours. From there, you can take the bus back to your car in Vaduz or Malbun.
1st overnight stay (incl. half board): Pfälzer hut
In the Pfälzer hut you will stay overnight in a dormitory with mattresses. Please note the following information:
- Hut sleeping bag: obligatory for hygienic reasons
- Earplugs: the hut is noisy, especially on social evenings, and someone may be snoring in the same room
- Towel: preferably a compact travel towel for the washroom (showers are not available)
- Alpine Club card: take it with you if you are a member
- Headlamp or flashlight: helpful if you are out and about at night
- Cash: Drinks can only be paid for in cash in Swiss francs or euros
2nd overnight stay (incl. half board): Berggasthaus MATU or hotel in Triesenberg
Overnight stay in a shared room at the Berggasthaus Matu on Gaflei with half board in organic quality.
Alternatively, you can stay at the Hotel Kulm or the Hotel Oberland in Triesenberg. Single rooms can be booked for an extra charge.
Both in the Pfälzer hut and in the mountain inn or hotel, you will receive a packed lunch in the morning for on the way. So you can fortify yourself during the hike.

The package includes a hiking map of the Principality of Liechtenstein at a scale of 1:25,000. You can pick it up at the Malbun Center during opening hours from 9:00 to 17:00. One map is issued per booking.
