Description
Jasper van 't Hof, born in Enschede, the Netherlands in 1947, can justifiably be described as a veteran of European jazz. With his bands Association P. C. and Pork Pie, he is regarded as an important pioneer of fusion jazz and jazz rock. His "Pili Pili", which combined European fusion jazz with African music and featured musicians such as Trilok Gurtu, Manu Dibango and Kenny Wheeler, was sensationally successful, with Angelique Kidjo laying the foundations for her international career. In addition to his band work, van 't Hof has shaped a whole series of duo projects with saxophonists such as Christof Lauer, Bob Malach and Charlie Mariano, as well as the groundbreaking album "Mama Rose" with Archie Shepp. His new duo album with saxophonist Peter Materna will be released at the end of 2025, and one of their first live dates will be at TAK.
As a saxophonist, Peter Materna is a sound explorer with a clear home in jazz, but classical harmonies and experiments are also mixed in, and his improvisations are characterized by melodic and emotional depth. In addition to the Peter Materna Quartet, he has played with Marc Copland, Olivia Trummer, Florian Weber, Yayo Morales and the Bonn Beethoven Orchestra. Since 2010, he has directed the Bonn Jazz Festival, which has become a fixed star on the international jazz scene.
The combination of the extroverted pianist van 't Hof and the lyrical saxophonist creates an electrifying tension of impulsive and delicate elements. Compositions by the two alternate with standards in their personal interpretation.
