Bats in Liechtenstein - a photo exhibition
All 23 native bat species are presented with photos by René Güttinger and texts by Silvio Hoch. The very special biology of bats is presented in an understandable way.
Description
Bats in Liechtenstein
Bats are the only truly flying mammals and, with almost 1,500 species, are found on all continents except Antarctica. To date, 23 of the 30 species found throughout Switzerland and 40 throughout Europe have been recorded in the Alpine Rhine Valley. This makes them the largest number of species of all mammal orders. This pleasing finding contrasts with the concern that many of the native bat species are severely threatened in their populations. The widespread ignorance of the population plays a not insignificant role in this. For this reason, bat conservation is trying to raise understanding and sympathy for this endangered species group by providing targeted information.
This is also the aim of the exhibition at the Liechtenstein National Museum. All 23 bat species recorded in Liechtenstein to date are presented in words and pictures. The biology of bats with their agile flight, their precise echolocation, their species-specific diet, their hibernation and their very special foraging behavior is explained in detail. The history of bat research in Liechtenstein as well as the methods used for research are presented.
