With the exhibition “Double Echo,” the Bechter Kastowsky Gallery presents two leading figures in contemporary painting: Liliane Tomasko and Hubert Scheibl.
Swiss artist Liliane Tomasko develops her works through a slow, focused process. Her abstract painting draws inspiration from an exploration of the subconscious and revolves around themes such as sleep, dreams, and transcendence. Building on these themes, the New York-based painter develops a distinctive visual language. Characteristic of her work is the multi-layered application of paint, often combined with sprayed lines, which gives the works an “all-over” structure that is simultaneously subtly bound by the format. The viewer’s gaze is guided across the entire picture plane and unfolds in a continuous process of perception.
Tomasko's works are included in major international collections, and The Latest is currently on view at the Hilti Art Foundation Vaduz and the Albertina in Vienna, The Latest other venues; a solo exhibition in Koblenz is scheduled for late summer.
Tomasko’s works are juxtaposed with those of Hubert Scheibl, which are created through a two-step process. First, the artist applies a translucent, colored base layer that serves as the picture plane. In a second step, he creates a striking mark with a single, gestural brushstroke, in which chance plays a central role. In his series “Ones,” this single, unrepeatable intervention remains the defining feature. The interplay of color, movement, and chance lends the works a special intensity and expressiveness.
Scheibl's works are exhibited internationally and are currently on view in Vienna. The Albertina Klosterneuburg recently presented a joint exhibition of works by both artists—a compelling juxtaposition that is taken up and further explored in “Double Echo.”
