A Single Man
Description
George Falconer, a literature professor at a university in Los Angeles, has been living alone since his partner Jim was killed in a car accident eight months ago. Jim and George had lived together for 16 years; the loss of this loved one robs George of all vitality. George keeps his homosexuality a secret in the conservative American society of the 1960s. Nevertheless, his neighbors know about it and mock him behind his back. At university, he gives a lecture on Aldous Huxley, after which Kenny, one of his students, engages him in conversation. He will meet him again later that evening, as Kenny has found his place of residence and is waiting for him. They have a few beers together and go swimming together in the Pacific at night, but the evening, which started so easily, eventually turns again.
Isherwood creates a complex and exciting portrait of a man who has lost his love and is trying to find his way in life, even if everyday life seems meaningless to him. The novel was congenially adapted for the screen in 2009 by director Tom Ford with Colin Firth in the leading role. The film won a whole host of awards - including the Oscar and Golden Globe for Colin Firth and the Venice International Film Festival Award.
